What causes dry rot
Dry rot is wood decay caused by certain species of fungi that digest parts of the wood which give the wood strength and stiffness.
Contrary to its name, dry rot needs moisture to flourish and grow. If the timber in your home starts being soaked with moisture content above its acceptable levels (anywhere from 20% +) the dry rot spores will start to appear and develop into the damaging fungus. From there, the fungus can spread throughout your house to other wooden structures.
Common causes of dry rot include:
External defects such as defective guttering or a leaking roof
Dry rot will only affect timber that is damp, so for this reason, removing the source of moisture is key to dry rot eradication.
Once the moisture’s source has been stopped, all infected timbers need to be removed from the property. The amount of timber to be removed will depend on the extent and severity of the attack. In some cases we are also able to treat dry rot in-situ this includes by applying the appropriate fungicidal spray, timber pastes or dual purpose fungicide
